Notes for Walking is a locative and augmented reality app developed for Middle Head National Park in Sydney, NSW. Presented as part of the Sydney Festival from January 5- 27, 2013, Notes for Walking leads audiences around the abandoned naval fort at Middle Head, Mosman, on a journey that is part pilgrimage, part adventure trek and part mystery tour.

Using location based and augmented reality technologies included in the app, visitors will discover a set of short video notes that are electronically tagged to the headland, a landscape of abandoned buildings, hidden zones and spectacular views of Sydney Harbour. The thirteen notes bring together highly crafted video, sound and textual fragments to intrigue and enrich the experience of walking through this spectacular, but often overlooked Sydney landscape. With social media elements encouraging people to take photos and leave messages, Notes for Walking draws people into a poetic journey of discovery.

Using Notes for Walking on location at Middle Head, visitors will discover the notes attached to four main areas – the Gate, the Outer Fort, the Inner Fort and the Cabin. The app offers three modes for accessing the notes – AR, MAP and List mode. Using AR mode allows the notes to be accessed as visitors draw near, and MAP mode allows the notes to be accessed via Google map inside the app. The List mode arranges the notes in a simple list view that can be easily accessed at any time. Please note that the AR mode of the Notes for Walking app only becomes active when you are onsite to Middle Head National Park, Mosman, NSW.

Visitors are reminded to take care as they walk. Notes for Walking invites audiences into rough walking tracks and parkland, in proximity to tunnels and elevated areas at Middle Head, Sydney. Children should be supervised at all times.

Due to the integration of high quality video and audio in this project, the app is around 60MB in size and should ideally be downloaded before visiting the site. The video and audio in Notes for Walking has been specifically optimised for outdoor experience. Make sure you charge up your phone before visiting, and bring headphones along if you wish.
